Easier, faster,
cheaper and safer migrations
to BusinessObjects XI R2
Everyone knows that migrations from BusinessObjects
5 or 6 to XI R2 is a difficult one. While about 40-50% of
customers have already migrated, there are plenty of examples
that show careful planning is important to keep costs and
schedules in check.
One area that is not easily addressed is SECURITY.
In this era of Sarbanes-Oxley, Basel and increasing concerns
about confidentiality and privacy, it is key to make sure
that your data is well protected and is not put at risk because
of a migration project like XI R2. If users have less rights
than before, they will call and you will know. But what if
they have more than they did before? Will they call then?
360view reduces your risks
and puts you in COMPLETE CONTROL of the security aspects of
your migration. See below why BusinessObjects itself recommends
360view.
Benefit #1:
Easier
360 view includes a collection of Universes and Reports exposing
every aspect of the security map clearly, making it easier
to take action with solid knowledge. The reports can be deployed
so the results are visible even to end-user leads themselves.
They can consult the reports and work with IT to rethink their
security maps. The administration of your current BO environment
is also much easier, creating the opportunity for consolidation
and cleaning up before the migration occurs. Even if a migration
is not planned until 2008, the benefits of easier administration
are clear.
Benefit #2:
Faster
To migrate, you MUST map the currently deployed security.
The steps involved, without 360view, look like this: in the
supervisor module, you must document all security commands,
universe access/restrictions, documents access/restrictions
and all domain access/restrictions -- FOR ALL USERS! If there
are any inconsistencies between groups, you have to figure
out the EFFECTIVE security. Then, because the security is
different in XI R2, this user-centric map must be inversed
to an object-centric view.
This amounts to about 50 clicks per user, not mentioning
where this needs to be written/documented. For one of our
clients where they had 6500 users, this amounted to 27,000
user-group combinations and more than 10,000,000 rights to
manipulate. This does not even fit in MS Excel!
Benefit #3:
Cheaper
Faster means cheaper. How long would it take (and how many
errors would one generate) to document 10M rights? Furthermore,
by having a complete map, a cleanup can be made to reduce
10M rights by, on average, 70-80%. One can not achieve this
level of optimization without making sure everything in the
current map is considered. This has positive impacts on tests,
manual labor and risks
in
your migration project.
Benefit #4:
Safer
Security matrices generated by 360view are
100% accurate. Much less support is required post-migration
by reducing errors. No risk that some users will have more
rights than they had before (unless planned). It may even
be possible to compare with a Security Viewer CSV export for
verification/audit.
